Rocky Hollow Bluegrass & Three Tall Pines

TICKET PRICES: $15/person; $7/children under 12
Tickets are available on-line at www.fosteringArts.org

Veteran bluegrassers Rocky Hollow share the bill with one of the hottest new bands to hit the scene, Three Tall pines. Rocky Hollow Bluegrass became a band 25 years ago and still contains three original members – husband & wife team Nancy Hutchings (lead Vocals) and Dick Hutchings (Banjo), and Dick’s brother, Gary Hutchings (Dobro & Lead Guitar). Rounding out the band is long-time Rocky Hollow member Dan Parker on Doghouse Bass and Don Lurgio on Mandolin.

Three Tall Pines is a four piece co-op that relays the emotions of early American rural life through the sounds of impassioned harmonies and progressive instrumentations. Dan Bourdeau, Joe Lurgio, Gian Pangaro and Emily Rideout make up this harmonic co-op and play to the classic sounds of acoustic guitar, mandolin, upright bass and fiddle. Their music is influenced by singer-songwriters from Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, and Jimmy Rogers to the bluegrass styles of Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley, and the Scottish fiddling of Tim O’Brien and Bonnie Rideout.

The session will begin at 6pm at the Wild Colonial.

RIFC Check-in will start at 7pm and announcements start at 7:30pm.

THE IMAGINE AWARDS on MONDAY, JAN. 12:

It’s time to get together again to network and celebrate, and to honor our selected peers who have achieved excellence in their work through dedication to our industry.

IMAGINE is pleased to announce the following “Imaginnaires” so called because they are rich in creativity, thoughts and ideas. They are dedicated, insightful, and generous of themselves and their resources, which they use to serve our industry. They are:

Bestor Cram is a writer, shooter, teacher, director, producer and the leader of Northern Light Productions, which he founded in Boston, MA in 1982. The company is celebrating 25 years of total immersion in the Documentary Arts and many mighty accomplishments including going from one film in the incubator to producing 8 major works per year.

Lyda Kuth is the Executive Director of the LEF Foundation. In 2008 LEF awarded $300,000 to 26 Grant and Fellowship recipients and since 2001 LEF has been providing support for independent video and filmmakers in New England with over $1,800,000 in grants distributed. Under her guidance LEF reaches out to other industry related organizations and works closely with the New England Film community.

John MacNeil formed Moody Street Pictures five years ago with a goal to build a collaborative of producers, camera operators, directors and editors. A long-time cameraman, both he and John Rule worked for Brian Heller at Boston Camera in 1982. He went on to found the Boston Film Factory now both companies are a part of Rule Broadcast. An industry leader and producer he has become an advocate for the industry.

Angela Peri started Boston Casting, Inc. about 17 years ago after her acting adventures in Italy, a casting job for CINEMA PARADISO, a stint as a stand-up comic, and working for a another top-casting agency in Boston, she wanted to start her own business. Deciding between a restaurant and a casting agency, she chose the later and directors and actors alike are happy with her decision.

Congratulations! We view each of them as making a significant difference to our industry in New England. We are so very fortunate to have them in our midst and they inspire us all!

Please join me honoring our newest “Imaginnaires” at IMAGINE’s Industry New Year’s Celebration Awards Gala:

AUREA – 2008-09 Subscription Series

…..We hope you have seen and enjoyed Till Human Voices Wake Us and A

Child’s Christmas in Wales, the first programs of our 2008–09 subscription series.

It has been exciting to pair the poetry of T.S. Eliot with music by Ravel,

Stravinsky, Milhaud, Wagner, and Chopin, and the Dylan Thomas tale with

Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach, Grainger, Clarke and old English carols. We were delighted

at the warm and enthusiastic response from our audiences, and look forward to

the rest of our season — Inflections of Love in February, Under a Latin

Moon in April, and Ecstasies Above, a June collaboration with the Providence

Singers.

Developing these integrations of music and poetry has been challenging,

enervating, exhausting, and expensive. Ticket revenues pay only a portion of the

costs of producing these programs, and we are reluctant to raise our ticket

prices because it would exclude some of our audience, including students. I’m

writing in the hope that if you are not already a Friend of Aurea, you will

become one by making a tax-deductible gift to support these and future

programs, and that if you are a Friend, you will renew your support. Gifts at all

levels — Loyal Friends ($50), Valuable Friends ($100), Sustaining Friends

($250), Patrons ($500), and Angels ($1,000) — are welcome. Friends of Aurea enjoy

after-concert events, listings in the programs, and huge appreciation from

the musicians, actors, and board of Aurea. Please take a moment to send your

check to Aurea, 195 Sessions Street, Providence, RI 02906, or contribute

online with _PayPal_

(https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=531416) . We are grateful for your support, and look forward to

seeing you at future programs. With warm thanks, and best wishes for the holidays

and the new year! Consuelo Sherba, Artistic Director,

……. Barbara Slater will be singing an all-Mercer program at Rochambeau

Library, Hope Street, Providence on Thursday, Feb. 26 – free and open to the

public.

On Wednesday, March 25, Barbara and Friends will return to The Hi-Hat

singing songs of The Great American Songbook and jazz standards.

Sue Job, Fiber Wearables

Su Job has been working in fiber for over 20 years. Job received her BFA from the University of Tennessee and her MFA from the University of Washington.  Job divides her time between lecturing on art history at several colleges and her studio art practice.

“Each scarf is created one at a time. I paint and screen print with dye on silk charmeuse and silk/rayon velvet. My current designs feature silk-screen prints from photographs taken in my neighborhood. I introduce a group of designs several times a year and for the most part I use that design matrix as a starting point. Each scarf is stretched, painted, printed, and constructed individually.”

Work with Laura Matthews on your screenplay, and you’ll get expert advice on story structure, characterization and theme. Laura will show you how your script can keep the reader on the edge of their seat, from page one to one-twenty.

Here’s some recent feedback from a film producer: “This is fantastic insight! I’m reading through your analysis carefully and I will definitely forward it to the writer. You clearly have a comprehensive understanding of structure. I’ve never read anything so practically put in such a useable way.”

Time to Apply for The Big Read

Application Deadline: February 3, 2009

Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), announces the fifth deadline for The Big Read. The purpose of The Big Read is to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture. Grants ranging from $2,500 – $20,000 are available to encourage local communities to inspire reading by developing and carrying out programming revolving around a single work of literature. Programming must be conducted between September 2009 and June 2010. This will be the only application deadline in 2009.

Big Read grants require the participation of a library as a lead applicant or a partner. IMLS strongly encourages museums of all types to apply as lead applicants or as partner organizations in The Big Read. Communities across the country have strengthened their Big Read projects by enlisting the support of art, science, history, and children’s museums, as well as aquaria, arboreta, botanical gardens, nature centers, and zoos. Some library/museum Big Read collaborations include:

  • In celebration of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the Omaha Children’s Museum is hosting a “Build a Raft Challenge” in its Science & Technology Learning Lab to see what it takes to build a raft that will float down the mighty Mississippi, just like the characters in the novel.
  • The Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, CA, is using its collection of original and rare Jack London material to complement programming for The Call of the Wild. The museum/library is hosting a special exhibition featuring London’s Klondike diary, a first edition of the novel, a theater advertiser’s booklet for the 1935 film, an autographed London manuscript, and original letters and photographs of the author.
  • The novel To Kill a Mockingbird features more than fifty different food items. A lecture series at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans, LA, is exploring issues related to food, many of which are particularly relevant to the South and the Great Depression. Presentations will examine how food is used to create tension and move along the plot; food and gender issues; and the connections between food and social justice. http://thebigreadnola.com.

Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive:

  • a grant,
  • financial support to attend a national orientation meeting,
  • educational and promotional materials for broad distribution,
  • an organizer’s guide for developing and managing Big Read activities,
  • guidance on working with local media,
  • inclusion of the organization and its activities on the Big Read Web site, and
  • the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative.

The Request for Proposals can be downloaded at www.NEABigRead.org. The proposal deadline is February 3, 2009. Questions should be directed to Arts Midwest at 612-238-8010 or TheBigRead@artsmidwest.org.

From NEW FILM NATION:

INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL OF BOSTON FINAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE!!!New England’s premier film festival, the Independent Film Festival of
Boston, will take place April 22-28 at the Boston area’s most
historic arthouse cinemas, the Somerville Theatre, the Brattle
Theatre, and the Coolidge Corner Theatre, as well as at Boston’s
newest state-of-the-art theater at the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Over 90 films will be shown alongside of weekend panel discussions
and nightly parties. Other events unique to the festival that will
take place include the 4th annual filmmaker-only Candlepin Bowling
Challenge and the filmmaker-only on-field tour of Fenway Park. Relax
in what has been described by many as the “best filmmakers lounge on
the festival circuit”. Here’s what others have had to say about
IFFBoston:

“My first two trips to IFFBoston single-handedly justified my
decision to start making independent films. IFFBoston’s organizers
have a very special gift, because I haven’t talked with anyone who
hasn’t had a great time attending the festival, whether it be as
filmmaker, juror, audience member, or volunteer. If you make a film,
submit it to IFFBoston. And if you love movies, attend IFFBoston. You
won’t regret it.”
Michael Tully, COCAINE ANGEL and SILVER JEW

“IFFBoston has redefined the term ‘filmmaker friendly’ for every
producer, director, writer, editor, cinematographer, composer and
actor that has been lucky enough to experience the festival. The
audiences are passionate and intelligent, which is every filmmaker’s
dream.
Joe Swanberg, LOL and HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS

“In only its third year, the Independent Film Festival of Boston has
become the major game in town: a smartly programmed and risk-taking
festival that balances ‘big’ indie films with the best in local
filmmaking.”
Ty Burr, BOSTON GLOBE (2005)

“In just its fourth year of existence the Independent Film Festival
of Boston has become the premier such event in this area”
Peter Keough, BOSTON PHOENIX (2006)

“The annual Independent Film Festival of Boston has accomplished more
in its five-year history than some festivals do with twice as much
time and resources.”
Matt Dentler, INDIEWIRE (2007)

The final deadline for submissions is December 31st. IFFBoston is
looking for films of all shapes and sizes. You can submit your film
by clicking https://www.withoutabox.com/login/4048
and do more

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

The 2009 Newport Annual returns in February to the Newport Art Museum and officials there will be accepting entries on January 22nd and 23rd.  The much-anticipated show draws hundreds of entries from regional artists in a multitude of media including painting, watercolor, prints/drawings/pastels, three-dimensional, photography/video and mixed media. First prizes awarded by Capasso will come with a cash award. In a departure from past tradition, the Museum’s curator, Nancy Whipple Grinnell, will award The Newport Art Museum Award: a future solo show for the winning artist.
