Language, Place, and Object: A Juried Exhibition

The interplay of image and language has long been considered the most complete form of communication. As Simon Morley puts it in Writing on the Wall, ” The former mode allows openness of interpretation and freedom of mental and sensual movement, while the latter confines the reader to a predetermined route…” The goal of this exhibition is to find works that can communicate one of the basic ideas of being, place, through a unique interplay of image/object and language.

Jennifer Schmidt, Professor of Printmedia, School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

Specifications:

Open to all media. Due to space and time constraints, performance can only be considered as previously documented work. Preference will be given to work that conceptually relates to the proposed theme of the exhibition, with a sensitivity towards the form, material, and manner in which the idea is related to the theme.

Images submitted for consideration should be on open formatted cd (preferred method, 300 dpi jpg or tiff) or 35 mm slides (no glass slides). All images should be labeled in accordance to CAA specifications for easy identification, and should correspond to the information provided on the entry form. All DVD entries must be under 3 minutes due to time constraints. If accepted into the exhibition, a longer version may be shown.

All submission packets should contain no more than 3 entries, a CV, artist statement, a check for the entrance fee of $25 made out to the Washington Street Art Center, and a self addressed stamped envelope for return of materials.

Deadline:

All materials must be received by February 1, 2007.

Notification:

Notification of accepted entries will be made by no later than March 1, 2007.
