We are surrounded by stories. We are embedded in stories. And if we believe the poet Muriel Rukeyser that “the universe is made of stories, not atoms,” then we are these stories.
Stories must not be confused with just plain facts. Rather, facts draw whatever power they have from the stories they tell and their manner of telling. There is always something added to facts to make stories. One way to think about this something added is as ornament: a poetic metaphor, a musical riff, or a visual flourish can all serve to deepen and broaden the stories that support them.
Just as some stories are better served straight and to the point, the very meaning and beauty of others rests on the power of ornament to enhance, expand, and invoke. In both cases, it is nearly impossible to disentangle a story from its ornament.
Part of the larger FirstWorksProv festival, Pixilerations [v.4] investigates the state of New Media arts through installation, interactive concert performance and film/video screenings. Pixilerations [v.4] – the fourth annual showcase of New Media arts – invites artists, musicians and film/video makers to submit work that investigates connections or disparities between story and ornament.
The Pixilerations [v.4] Gallery opens the evening of Friday, September 28 and remains open for public viewing from noon to 8pm through October 13, 2007. Installations will be exhibited in the Sol Koffler Gallery in the Rhode Island School of Design’s Center of Integrative Technology located in the Mason Building at 169 Weybosset Street in downtown Providence.
Performances will be held on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29, 2007 (location TBA).
Hosted by the Magic Lantern Experimental Film Collaborative, a film/video screening is scheduled for the week of October 1, 2007 at the Cable Car cinema on South Main Street, Providence.
