Exhibit by Nela Barbosa – June 22-30th
….at Cape Verdean American Community Development Center, (CACD), 120 High Street, Pawtucket; – 12:00pm-6:00pm weekdays and until 8:00pm on weekends. Opening gala: June 22 – 6-8pm, followed by Cape Verdean night celebration party, tickets for the party are $10.00 and are available in advance by contacting CACD at #(401) 475-9834. The formal gala is free to the public. Nela Barbosa, as she signs her paintings, is eager to share her work with others the world over, especially the Cape Verdeans’ in the diasporas which often find themselves somewhat removed when it comes to cultural expression through art work. Artwork will be available for purchase. Manuela Brazao Barbosa, otherwise known as Nela, has exhibited in some of the most prominent cultural art institutions of Cape Verde. She has also been commissioned by the Cape Verdean government a number of times. Another of her paintings was given to the President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, offered as a national treasure when the president of Cape Verde visited Cuba. Her paintings are highly sought after by many high profile visitors to the Islands. Her works can also be found decorating the international airports of Cape Verde as well as many banks and hotels among other institutions in the Islands.Amy Wynne Derry & Johnathan Derry: “Side By Side” – through June 23

…..The Portsmouth Arts Guild recently announced the winners of the photography show, which is currently on view at the Center for the Arts, 2679 East Main Road, Portsmouth, R.I. 02871. Jill McLaughlin was awarded first place for her entry entitled Three Graces, Eric Hovermale received the second place for Night Dancer, third place was given to Lenny Rumpler for his photograph In Between. There were three honorable mentions awarded to Donna StAmant, Roses in Silver, Ellen Williams, Fishing Shack, and John Foraste, Pine Needles and Rock. The Center for the Arts is open Thursday-Sunday, 1:00-5:00 PM, and everyone is cordially invited to view the show which runs from now until June 24, 2007. Friday August 10 8:30pm $15 – Bryan Lee & his Blues Review. Bryan Lee is a true New Orleans name with over 30 years performing on Bourbon Street. Bryan is a unique presence in the blues touring circuit. A true grit blues show as fun to watch, as it is to hear. An accomplished songwriter and guitarist with several well distributed and critically acclaimed recordings. 60 years old, blind and still a dominating image in any festival. Tuesday, July 3 8:30pm $15 – Duke Robillard Band. Duke Robillard is one of this era’ s most acclaimed guitar players, having won four W.C. Handy Awards as “Blues Guitarist of the Year” and receiving a Grammy Award nomination for his 2006 release, Guitar Groove-A-Rama. This Pawtucket-based artist is also one of this year’s recipients of the Pell Awards for Excellence in the Arts 2007. July 27, 8pm -$18 – Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboys. One of a small handful of women in Zydeco, Rosie has the best chance of long-term success. Her warm stage presence, combined with the infectious Zydeco beat, makes her irresistible to audiences. She also is one of the few younger Zydeco players who still writes and sings some of her own material in Creole French. …..For those loyal readers of the Pawtucket Times – a institution that has provided us with the local “news” since the late 1800′s, you will be saddened to learn that some of its key editorial staff – who have been part of our “Pawtucket and the Blackstone Valley” familyfor many years, are no longer employed by The Times. In these days of downsizing, reorganization and elimination – this local newspaper with its award-winning writers and photographers, has not been spared of this economic blow. Gone are: Kevin O’Connor, Doug Hadden, Rich Dugas, and Dave Casey. Pawtucket Arts Festival 2007 – Call for Artists – Sept. 15/16, 2007
…..This two-weekend festival will be packed with artistic events throughout the City of Pawtucket. Our kickoff event will be another great concert at McCoy Stadium sponsored by PawSox featuring Counting Crows, Collective Soul and Live. Again, major advertising will done to promote our Festival – through radio, TV, highway billboard and newspapers. We are currently seeking artists for our “Stone Soup Folk Fest/Arts Fest in Slater Park” topped off with the ending concert of the season by the RI Philharmonic “Pops in the Park”. Rental for 10′x10′ area in Slater Park for the weekend is $50.00. Security provided. Deadline for application is August 1. …..This summer, in July and August, open for individual projects such as portrait, still life, or cast drawing and painting. You can sign up for one or both of the months. This is an opportunity for artists who may not have the time during the school year or don’t feel the need to join a full time program to receive specialized, individual instruction on what it is they feel they need to concentrate on. This is a great chance for beginners to try traditional drawing or painting without making a full commitment and for all who want the experience of working in a professional studio. The studio is open Monday thru Friday, 10am to 4pm. Cost is $800.00/month, space limited to eight students. There is a non-refundable deposit of $200.00 made out to The New School of Classical Art.
