Immerse Yourself in the Arts at a Country Retreat

The Millay Colony for the Arts, located on the grounds of Steepletop, the historic home of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, is launching a new artist retreat program featuring two five-day artist workshops:“Voice and Range: An Intensive Poetry Workshop”

July 27th through July 31st.
This program will help participants expand the range of their poems while strengthening the individual voice behind them. Students will read an eclectic range of poetry and generate a draft of a poem each day. The program instructor is Mark Wunderlich, the author of “Voluntary Servitude,” and a literature and writing instructor at Bennington College in Vermont, as well as a member of the faculty of the graduate writing program at Columbia University.

“Mixed Media Works on Paper”
August 30th to September 3rd
A drawing workshop taught by Laura Davis Battle. Participants will explore a range of materials and methods, working from memory, dreams, and text. Laura Davis Battle’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. She is currently Professor of Studio Arts at Bard College.

Each of the classes will include eleven hours of workshop time, all meals, private bedrooms, and spacious private studios, as well as a special evening reception and a tour of the historic Steepletop grounds.

The Millay Colony for the Arts is a not-for-profit arts organization offering comprehensive one month residencies to visual artists, writers and composers at Steepletop, the hilltop property in Austerlitz, NY where the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) lived and wrote for 25 years. The colony was founded in 1973 by the poet’s sister, Norma Millay Ellis, as a way of honoring Millay’s life and work, and providing other artists with a nurturing and inspiring environment.
