As the Land Turns is the latest production from Providence-based performance collective Trutheatertheater. Over the past several years, the group has organized a unique series of site-specific performances that feature fantastical, costumed characters, unique sound design, props, and lighting. Thematically the work centers on universal, archetypal quests of humankind, such as understanding time, space, nature, life, and death. These performances have generally been one-night-only affairs for those in-the-know within Providence’s fertile arts underground — now Trutheatertheater presents a work for all, in the wonderful parks of Providence. As the Land Turns is a autumnal celebration unlike any other, in the spirit of the ancient Greek theater, where community would gather to watch players represent their world in an open forum, in real-time (as opposed to modern television or movies).
As the Land Turns is filled with music, mysterious doors, enlightening trees, and the Earth’s last dragon presiding over it all with an unusual sense of humor. In this episode of Trutheatertheater’s ongoing “psychedelic soap opera,” a fellowship of mystical creatures and magical humans face their demons alone and together. When the dragon dies, taking the memories of his ancient race with him, the others must learn to sing together in memory of their hilarious and frightful friend. Audiences of all ages will thrill to the humor and fantasy of this live work, rated “PG with an edge.”
The implicit message of the production: “What a Wonderful Day to Be Alive!”
This just-after-sunset production is meant for a meeting of open sky with hi-tech lighting and sound effects. Props and set pieces were created by local artists Jungil Hong (printmaker and sculptor, often featured at Gallery Agniel), Jo Dery (filmmaker/printmaker), Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt, Fort Thunder, printmaker), and Rob Coggeshal (Fort Thunder). Sound design and music was created by members of such Providence bands as Urdog, Wizzardz, Crude Hill, and Manbeard. Costuming, writing, direction, and performance credits include: Peter Glantz (Trutheatertheater Director, and co-director of Lightning Bolt¹s Power of Salad DVD, as well as co-director of the Pick a Winner video compilation DVD on Load Records), members of Forcefield (Providence arts collective featured at New York’s Whitney Museum), and members of Providence¹s famed, now-defunct, Fort Thunder collective.
As the Land Turns toured to Montreal in September, and is scheduled for an October 1st feature at the Natural Bridges State Park in North Adams, MA, presented by the Contemporary Art Center.
