Register now for art classes at Newport Art Museum!
Now is the time to register for adult and youth fall art classes as well as holiday workshops for teens and children at the Newport Art Museum’s Coleman Center for Creative Studies.
Adult programs include art history, ceramics, collage, drawing, jewelry, painting, pastels, photography and printmaking.
Prominent artists with regional and national reputations share their experience and knowledge with small groups of students during Visiting Artist Workshops at the Newport Art Museum’s school, the Coleman Center for Creative Studies. Workshops with Dora Atwater Millikin, Ilse Buchert Nesbitt, Jeremy Miranda and Susan Stone are scheduled for Fall 2008 and space is still available in the Millikin, Miranda and Stone sessions.
Millikin’s “Interpreting the Cityscape in Paint” workshop will explore
ordinary outdoor subject matter through the medium of oil paint, focusing on
composition, drawing skills, color and surface treatment. Millikin’s solo
exhibition “Geometry of Place” ran this summer at the Newport Art Museum.
This workshop for intermediate painters runs September 19 – 21, 10am – 3pm.
Cost is $240 for Museum members; $265 for non-members.
“Jeremy Miranda: Composition of Landscape” takes students outdoors to create
field studies at multiple locations. Miranda studied at Massachusetts
College of Art & Design and has had numerous regional exhibitions. This
one-day workshop runs on September 27, 10am – 4pm. (Rain date: October 4.)
Cost is $80 for Museum members; $90 for non-members.
Susan Stone will teach one-, two- and three-point perspective during her one
day workshop, “Perspective Drawing.” Stone specializes in architectural
renderings, scientific illustration and graphic art. October 4: 10am – 4pm.
Cost is $70 for Museum members; $80 for non-members, ($15 for supplies.)
Classes in a variety of media for young people in kindergarten through high school are meeting weekly beginning in September.
In conjunction with The Secret Garden Tour and the Museum’s exhibitions,
“The Eloquence of Place: Forty years of the Newport Restoration Foundation” and “Daniel McManus: New Work”, students can join Dan McManus for photographic tours of The Secret Garden Tour on September 6, Almy-Cory House at Prescott Farm on September 20 and Doris Duke’s Rough Point Mansion on October 4.

Holiday Clay (Grades 2-4) ~ Nov 18 and Dec 16, 4:30 – 6pm
Youth Holiday Photo (Teen) ~ Nov 25 and Dec 16, 3:30 – 5:30pm
