Public Art opportunity in Glendale, AZ

The City of Glendale announces a public art opportunity for qualified artists to design, fabricate and install public artwork that will enhance the pedestrian experience in downtown Glendale, Arizona.

The City of Glendale is embarking upon the process of redeveloping sections of Historic Downtown Glendale. Way-finding signage, intersection improvements, gateway features and redeveloped alleyways and bicycle pathways will enhance the pedestrian experience, connecting the downtown area to various City amenities such as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, the Glendale Visitor Center, the Glendale Civic Center and the Bead Museum. The selected artists will work with Kimley-Horn and Associates (engineers) and Corral Dybas Group (landscape architects), City of Glendale staff, and stakeholders near the downtown area to develop artwork concepts. Implementation and construction of art features will occur during the construction phase of this project. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2007.

The City of Glendale announces a public art opportunity for qualified artists to design, fabricate and install public artwork to enhance the pedestrian experience in downtown Glendale, Arizona.

Project Description

The City of Glendale is embarking upon the process of redeveloping sections of Historic Downtown Glendale. Way-finding signage, intersection improvements, gateway features and redeveloped alleyways and bicycle pathways will enhance the pedestrian experience, connecting the downtown area to various City amenities such as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, the Glendale Visitor Center, the Glendale Civic Center and the Bead Museum. The goal of the selected artists is to design, fabricate and install public artwork that will integrate into the streetscape design as it enriches the pedestrian experience.

Art features may include, but are not limited to, gateway monuments, paving designs, sidewalk graphics, lighting features, murals, interactive artwork, way-finding signage, or functional elements such as seating and bicycle racks. The character of the project must comply with the Glendale Downtown Streetscape Guidelines.

The selected artists will work with Kimley-Horn and Associates (engineers) and Corral Dybas Group (landscape architects), City of Glendale staff, and stakeholders near the downtown area to develop artwork concepts. Eligibility

This project is open to all professional artists who are residents of the United States. Ideal candidates will have:

· Previous public art experience and expertise is desirable, but not mandatory.

· Public involvement and community interaction experience.

· Ability to effectively respond to public issues and concerns.

Project Budget

The artwork budget is all-inclusive and will be no less than $50,000 and no more than $100,000 for the total project. The budget must cover all expenses including:

· Design and fabrication of proposal(s) for presentation of concepts to the City Council, citizen advisory boards and staff.

· All costs, including supplies and materials, necessary for design, fabrication and installation to complete this project. Artist will be responsible for engineering fees for artwork.

· Taxes and insurance.

· All costs for transportation for the artist, proposal and the artwork, including attendance at several public meetings and working with consultants and City staff.

Selection Process

A selection panel will be convened to review all submissions meeting application requirements and deadline. Artists will be selected on the basis of submission materials evidencing artistic quality of past work and experiences with similar public art projects. The panel will select up to ten finalists based upon preliminary submission materials. Each finalist will be awarded $1000 to develop a detailed proposal. Additional project information will be provided to each finalist. The panel will then interview each finalist and recommend up to three artists to do the work. Once recommended by the panel, the Glendale Arts Commission and the City Council must approve each proposal before the project may begin. The panel may recommend alternate artists for this project.

Application Requirements

For each panel member to receive a copy of your application materials please submit ten, collated, three hole-punched copies of a statement, resume/contact information and slide and public art projects lists. Materials should be held together with paperclips (no staples or folders please).

q A statement (not to exceed two pages) of interest, qualifications and project ideas.

q Current resume and contact information (not to exceed two pages). Be sure to include mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers, e-mail and website addresses.

q Up to ten 35mm duplicate slides of completed, representative artwork in a protective plastic slide sleeve. Each slide must be clearly labeled. Submit only one set of slides.

q A slide list with the title, medium, dimensions, date completed and a short annotated description of the artwork pictured in each slide.

q List of public art projects currently underway or completed over the past three years including names of contacts, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. If new to public art, a list of references, including names of contacts, telephone numbers and email addresses.

q Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if you wish to have your slides returned.

This Call to Artists does not commit the City to enter into an agreement, to pay any costs incurred in the preparation of the proposal to this request or in subsequent negotiations, or to produce a contract for the project. The City reserves the right to reject any or all applications, reissue the Call to Artists or procure any service by other means. The City is not responsible for loss of or damage to materials included with applications.
