features interviews with two Rhode Island artists…
John Dunnigan, Acting Department Head, Furniture Design, Rhode Island School of Design
John Dunnigan defines furniture as a useful object that collects meaning. “The best thing is when somebody comes up to me and says, ‘Hey, you made a table for me in 1973 and I still use it.’ It’s great to think that the kids have grown up, and they’ve lived their lives, and this is one of the props that’s been there.” It’s not hard to see how Grandma’s rocking chair has meaning, but what about that cheap fiberboard bookshelf that’s falling apart? Tune in to hear what Dunnigan thinks.
Lina Fruzzetti, Professor of Anthropology, Brown University Lina Fruzzetti has just completed a new documentary film, Singing Pictures, about the scroll-song tradition in a remote village in India. Huge ornate scrolls are painted to accompany a song that tells a story: some are Hindu stories about the gods, some are stories with important social messages – but others, Fruzzetti says, are about “mindless stuff…like these big guys who eat each other up – Jurassic Park. Or sometimes Titanic.”
