Based on Venezuela’s world-renowned youth orchestra program,
El Sistema, the String Orchestra Program at Community MusicWorks brings children from underprivileged neighborhoods together in an intensive, daily, after-school program where they participate in orchestra, lessons, concerts and workshops with guest artists.
The String Orchestra Program is a new program of Community MusicWorks, the ground-breaking music and social justice program founded in 1997 by MacArthur Foundation “genius” award winner Sebastian Ruth. CMW is a non-profit organization made up of professional musicians who provide free educational programming and performances with the goal of building meaningful, long-term relationships between musicians, children, and families in urban neighborhoods of Providence, Rhode Island.
Position Summary:
This is a unique opportunity to spend ten months growing a new initiative, set to begin in September 2012. The Associate Resident Musician will be involved in developing a curriculum for the String Orchestra Program, which is part of the growing network of
El Sistema-inspired programs in the United States. The Associate Resident Musician will collaborate with the Program Director in leading orchestra rehearsals and teaching lessons, planning activities and workshops for students, and performing in chamber music concerts. All aspects of the work will embody CMW’s values of mutual respect, inclusiveness, and student-driven learning.
Essential Functions:
Lead and assist in orchestra rehearsals of 20-30 students, ages 6-8
Lead and assist in musical skills development activities (singing, rhythm games, note-reading)
Teach private lessons to beginning violin and viola students
Participate in weekly reflection and planning sessions
Collaborate with program director in developing curriculum
Participate in professional development workshops
Communicate with parents and other program staff about students’ development
Collaborate with program staff and guest artists in workshops
Assist in student performances
Qualifications:
Excellence as a teaching artist/performer
Teaching experience (experience with children age 6-8 a plus)
Knowledge of music pedagogy (Suzuki, Kodaly, Dalcroze)
Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience preferred
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a diverse community
Passion for music, and for CMW’s mission of social change through music performance and education
Flexibility, including a willingness to experiment with different approaches to teaching and playing, and an ability to adapt to new situations
Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, families and peers
A self-starter, comfortable in a fast-paced and innovative organization
