The Jamestown Arts Center is excited to announce its new 11-week program where teens will be introduced to the field of design through a series of creative experiments, site visits, group activity, and hands on projects that explore concept development and idea generation. Participants will explore various brainstorming techniques including mind maps, sketching, collage, model building, and will also learn to envision their ideas using computer software in our brand new Mac Lab.

As participants develop skills and explore concepts, they will be presented with a design challenge. Student ideas will evolve and take shape, ultimately leading towards a self directed Dream Project. Participants will work individually and in small groups to create an innovative solution to the challenge and will be given the opportunity to visually develop their ideas and present it to the public during our Design 2013 event on January 10th.

The course is taught by Ryan Hughes Maguire, an illustrator, graphic designer and visual communications specialist with a BFA in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and an MFA in illustration from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. Ryan is currently Adjunct Faculty in Illustration, Graphic Design, and Foundation at the Art Institute of Boston. Joining Ryan in teaching the participants will be guest speakers from multiple industries in the design world.

Those interested in enrolling should contact the Jamestown Arts Center at (401) 560-0979 or stop in to 18 Valley St. and fill out a registration form. Enrollment open to teens ages 13  – 18. Class fee is $330 or $297 for members. Scholarships are available.
