RISCA is in the process of revising its grant applications and guidelines and updating its procedures for collecting support materials. Throughout the art world electronic submissions will soon become the norm and slides will be a thing of the past. We are currently assessing several mechanisms for collecting and reviewing electronic submissions. We will test an e-grant system for two upcoming “Call to Artists” for Rhode Island’s Public Art program and we are updating our in-house equipment to include a LCD projector and image editing software that allows for the formatting and presentation of digital images for panel review. With these systems in place, RISCA will soon accept electronic as well as slide submissions for all visual arts grants and fellowships (with the exception of Film and Video), with the goal of accepting only digital files in the near future.
For this upcoming October 1 deadline, RISCA will accept digital submissions in two specific categories. Applications for the 2006 Fellowships in Design and New Genres will be accepted with support materials in either 35 mm slides or digital images burned to disc.
Design and New Genres applicants may submit a PC compatible CD (or slides) with no fewer than 8 and no more than 10 images (up to 15 for New Genres applicants) representing artwork completed within the past three (3) years. Files and slides must be numbered with images corresponding to a numbered support materials reference sheet that includes the title, medium, size and year of completion of each work (the artist’s name should not appear on this sheet.) The artist’s name CANNOT appear on or alongside digital images. Any digital images labeled with the artist’s name or any other personal information will be disqualified. Images must be in JPEG format, 150 – 400 dpi, 600 x 900 pixels or 3” x 5” (no more than 500 KB). Please be aware that if your images do not meet the minimum dpi they may be deficient in quality for panel review. All files must be saved with the artist’s last name followed by the image number corresponding to the support materials list. (For example, smith1.jpeg, smith2.jpeg, smith3.jpeg, etc.) Please do not imbed images into a Power Point presentation. Adobe Photoshop will be used to open JPEGs. If they cannot be easily opened, they will not be considered. Emailed images will not be accepted. The artist/applicant’s name should be written on the CD or CD case. 35 MM slides should each be labeled with the artist’s name as well as title, medium, size and year of completion. CDs will not be returned and slides will be returned only if the artist provides a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Artists must submit a complete support materials reference sheet, a resume or cv, and a completed and signed application sheet. Resume and CV may be printed or included as a pdf or word document attached to the support materials disc. The support materials reference sheet must be printed and the application must be printed and signed by the applicant. Design is defined as work created using an applied, utilitarian approach, with a focus on use by others (such as architectural, landscape, fashion, interior, costume, set, or graphic design).
New Genres is a category that includes any work that does not fall within RISCA’s other Fellowship categories (go to http://www.arts.ri.gov/deadlines.htm for a list of these). Work that falls under the New Genres category may integrate more than one arts discipline, or it may include performance art, conceptual art, or experimental art forms. The applicant must be the primary artistic force behind the work, not a performer or interpreter of the work of another artist. Applicants should submit documentation of a minimum of one, maximum two, works/performances in one of the following formats: DVD, VHS, audio tape, CD, or PC compatible CD rom. Visual art submissions may be submitted through a maximum of 15 slides or jpegs on PC compatible disc (see formatting requirements above). Accompanying text may be included if it is part of the artwork itself. The artist’s name and personal information cannot appear anywhere on accompanying text.

A complementary exhibition to the Main Gallery’s simultaneous SPEAKING VOLUMES, this show features 4 projects designed for public consumption in this country and abroad.
German- born, Rhode Island resident Westermann’s art is frequently performative, engaging viewers as participants, even in contemplative activities. She creates work in the tradition of leading conceptual artists like Christo, Daniel Spoerri, Josef Beuys, and Gordon Matta-Clark. This exhibition features the public projects known as Borderland; Connectors; Observatory andRadio Nurse (after Noguchi). Each project is represented in the style of an architectural and/or urban planning presentation board.
Westermann has exhibited her work extensively, including major exhibits at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center and the Clay Street Press Gallery in Cincinnati, OH, the Freiburg Museum, the La Jolla Museum of ontemporary Art, Brown University, Art Resources Transfer, Alexandra Kaiser Gallery, and Momenta Art in Brooklyn. Her work has also been shown at Holly Solomon, the Newport and Bristol Art Museums, the Brooklyn
Museum of Art, Ronald Feldman Gallery, and Williams College. She has a show coming up at Wheeler Gallery as well as the URI Corridor Gallery.
She is a 1999 Recipient of a Sculpture Award from RISCA.
