Armageddon Presents: Amebix, Kylesa, and Morne

“Drink and be merry for tomorrow we may DIE!” Amebix- masters of

crustcore.

The band that stands before you known as Morne started with many

trials and tribulations. It began back in 2005, and even though there

were many interested individuals, only one lineup had the dedication

and perseverance to make the band a reality. The band features Milosz

(ex-Filth Of Mankind) on guitar, Jeff (ex-Disrupt, Grief) also on

guitar, Max on bass and Kevin on drums (both from various Boston

bands). Morne draws it’s influence from powerful, intense bands such

as Amebix, Neurosis and Sacrilege. The undertones of these bands can

certainly be heard in Morne’s sound, but they create an atmosphere all

their own. In November 2007, the band went to Dead Air studios in

Amherst MA to record their first official demo. The session was

originally intended as just a reference for the future LP, but after

much consideration the band decided to release the recording. An

unexpected offer soon came from the California based No Options

Records to do a limited vinyl release the demo in addition to the

already self released cassettes and CDs. The band has chosen to keep

the pressings of this recording limited only because they are planning

to re-record the songs for a debut full length in 2009. In the not so

distant future, Morne will be going back to the studio by the end of

summer 2008 to record tracks for the upcoming split 12″ with the UK

band Warprayer.

The Cretin 3

Ultraviolence is a band that plays really loud and hard. The only

thing we are concerned about is getting up there and having a good

time. Influences include: Against Me!, the Clash, and Desaparecidos.

The Vitamin Hoax is influenced by Screeching Weasel, Bad Brains,

Human Abstract, and many others.

Tony Jones & The Cretin 3 (ex members of The Jerktones, The

Knightsville Butchers, and The Goners).

The Providence Morons are influenced by alot of freeway roadside

Monthly Agenda: America a Breeding Ground For Reform

This discussion will introduce the movement of American art and how it

evolved from European art post World War II. Topics will include: the

Armory Show of 1913, modern American artists from the 20th century and

controversial works dealing with race, politics and feminist-gender

issues. The presenter, William Ruggiero, is a graduate of Providence

College with a degree in Art History. He is currently a member of the

staff at Rhode Island School of Design.

For The Love of Sloane, Conduit, and Daniella Ben-Bassat / Secret

Session

For the Love of Sloane is a four piece original rock band from the

biggest little state in the union, Rhode Island. FTLOS is vocalist

Elese Morrone, guitarist Stephen Moniz, and drummer Jay Jefferson.

They formed mid 2007 and have quickly become a family as much as a

band that is hoping to help breath life back into the Providence music

scene. Their latest member, Nicholas Magendantz, joined in 2008 after

responding to an ad for a replacement bassist. Each individual band

member brings their heart and soul, along with a wide range of

influences, to the song writing process, which helps in the

originality and diversity of their sound. The band takes their time

writing each song, trying to avoid the usual songwriting formulas and

cliche’s but still writing songs with catchy hooks, driving beats, and

memorable melodies.

Conduit is ROCK.

Equal parts of bone-crushing volume, catatonic tempos, and ominous

pronouncements of gloom and doom delivered by Daniella Ben-Bassat’s

keening voice - Secret Session is a new sonic universe. Despised by

rock critics and ignored by radio programmers, the group has become

one of the most prolific acts in North America. In performances

utilizing both sight and sound, Ben-Bassat rages through friction

induced distortion blasts - using hand made materials to put all

synthetically generated sound to shame. Known best for her extravagant

electrical motor orchestras, roaring and fuzzing out beneath morphing

projections and feedback ground swells, secret session is like the

perfect dawn patrol with all of your friends watching you go over the

falls bound to slip into a coral reef cave where you are not allowed

to escape until the roaring ocean lifts you out to dry sand. BEWARE.

When you close your eyes, you’ll swear you’re on Broadway.

Stay In The States is indie rock.

Stalemate is a pop rock quartet from RI determined to bring

eclecticism to the art and alternative rock scenes surrounding

Stevie Wonder to Trail of Dead in our pursuit for a more song focused

approach to original music in RI.

ARTS FUNDING INTACT ACTION ALERT: CONTACT SENATORS

Friday, January 30th, 2009

HOUSE PASSES ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE; ARTS FUNDING INTACT

ACTION ALERT: CONTACT SENATORS

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, January 28, passed the

economic stimulus legislation - H.R.1, the American Recovery and

Reinvestment Act - with provisions intact allocating $50 million for the

National Endowment for the Arts. All Republican House members, joined by

11 Democrats, voted against the measure.

TAKE ACTION: The Senate expects to vote on its version of the stimulus

legislation the week of February 2. If you have not yet done so, please

contact your senators urging their support to retain the $50 million

allocation for the National Endowment for the Arts when the economic

stimulus legislation takes final shape by including the provision passed

by the House, with 40% of the NEA funds going to state arts agencies and

the remainder distributed in direct grants to fund arts projects that

preserve jobs in the nonprofit arts sector.

Reach your senators by phone through the Capitol Switchboard at

202-224-3121, or by email at http://www3.capwiz.com/mygov/dbq/officials/ < http://www3.capwiz.com/mygov/dbq/officials/>

* Public funding for the arts is a sound investment in states and

communities facing tough economic conditions.

* The arts generate jobs, tax revenues and consumer spending.

* NEA funds to state arts agencies will enable state support for

the arts to continue where a depressed economy has resulted in revenue

shortfalls.

In the days leading up to the House floor debate on the bill, the arts

funding had been singled out by critics of the legislation as an example

of needless spending. When the measure came to the House floor on

Wednesday, Rep. David Obey (D-WI), chair of the Appropriations Committee

and floor manager for the bill, asserted that such claims caused the

debate to become “incredibly trivialized.” In defense of the spending

decisions made in the bill, he pointed out that the “arts funding in

this bill is a tiny fraction of this entire bill . . . about 6 cents out

of every $1,000 contained in this legislation.”

He then aimed his remarks at the economic purposes of the legislation

and the economic significance of the arts sector: “People ask, What does

funding for the arts have to do with jobs? It is very simple. People in

the arts field are losing their jobs just like anybody else. . . . You

have local arts agencies, you have local orchestras, local symphonies

and local arts groups of all kinds who are shutting down, laying people

off, and in a number of instances going bankrupt. This is a small, tiny

effort to keep some of those people employed over the next two years. I

make no apology for it. We have an obligation to salvage as many jobs as

we can regardless of the fields in which people work.”

Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA), chair of the Interior Appropriations

Subcommittee and sponsor of the arts funding in the stimulus package,

joined Obey in defending the NEA funds. He cited the arts community as a

tremendous cultural resource that “also serves to create jobs in local

communities all across our nation.”

Dicks went on to say that the arts sector of the economy “has been

inordinately impacted by the severe economic downturn we have been

experiencing in this past year . . . and the result has been disastrous

for many of our nation’s arts agencies and programs. . . . The amount in

this bill is intended to provide small grants to try to restore some of

the jobs which have been lost in the arts communities over the past

year. In addition to retaining jobs, these funds will support programs

which provide entertainment and richness in the lives of our communities

at a time when they are badly needed. In the context of this large

economic stimulus legislation, I believe this is a prudent investment,

and that it will contribute measurably to restoring the fiscal health of

our nation.”

Speaking in opposition to the bill, Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA) included the

arts funding in a list of “special interest groups’ pet projects” that

“represent an increase in government spending, not job creation.” Rep.

Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), also speaking against the legislation, cited

the NEA funding with others as “some of the most egregious examples of

programs within the massive spending bill.”

Democrats voting against the stimulus package were Reps. Allen Boyd

(D-FL), Bobby Bright (D-AL), Jim Cooper (D-TN), Brad Ellsworth (D-IN),

Parker Griffith (D-AL), Paul Kanjorski (D-PA), Frank Kratovil (D-MD),

Walt Minnick (D-ID), Collin Peterson (D-MN), Heath Shuler (D-NC), and

Gene Taylor (D-MS), including four freshman members of the House, three

of whom replaced Republican officeholders.

More about Mark and His Band

Mark Cutler, Best Vocalist in the Motif Magazine Music Poll for two

years in a row, has been part of the Rhode Island music scene since the

early 80s playing with local legends, The Schemers and national

recording artists The Raindogs. After winning the WBRU Rock Hunt and

WBCN Rock n Roll Rumble, the Schemers broke up and Mark moved up to

Boston to form The Raindogs. The band toured around the country for

several years with acts such as Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon, The Waterboys

and Don Henley. Recently, Mark moved back to Providence and performs

regularly with his acoustic friends and occasionally gets the Schemers

back together for special gigs. During the past election season, Mark

played for the crowd at the RI Obama rally and got to meet and talk with

the President Obama (then candidate) afterwards. Mark also performs

with The Dino Club, Forever Young and Men of Great Courage and plays

songs of love, heartache, drinking, trains, the changing world, right

and wrong.

Mark will be playing with Jimmy Berger on bass guitar, who plays with

the Schemers, the Men of Great Courage, and also sings in a barber shop

quartet; and Bob Kirkman on banjo, who also plays with the Men of Great

Courage, and performs bluegrass with various musicians around the state.
