Call To Artists for public art project in Calgary

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The Trico Centre for Family Wellness, in cooperation with The City of Calgary Public Art Program, is seeking Expressions of Interest (i.e. Requests for Qualifications) from experienced artists to create a permanent work of art for the Trico Centre for Family Wellness.

The successful artist will have expertise that includes practical, demonstrated experience in the field of public art, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and community stakeholders, and the ability to work within set budgets and construction schedules.

The Trico Centre is commissioning a work of public art to be permanently installed in the facility.  A budget of $75,500.00 Canadian dollars has been allocated for this unique piece of art.

A. Scope of Capital Project
The Trico Centre for Family Wellness, previously known as the Family Leisure Center, opened in 1983 as a cooperative community project.  The Trico Centre, which is located on City land, is a not for profit charitable organization.  Originally intended only to serve the residents of the 4 founding communities, the Trico Centre now draws participants from across south Calgary.  In 2008, the Trico Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary and continues to provide quality programs and services while keeping prices affordable for families.

The Goal of the Trico Centre is to provide diverse, family oriented recreational, fitness, and social programs in a well managed and self sustaining manner.  Their ‘Building for the Future” campaign is a capital construction project designed to benefit all of the residents of south Calgary.  Through significant strategic enhancements to the facility, the Trico Centre will attain long-term sustainability and success.  This campaign is focused on the addition of a new arena to help address the crucial shortages of ice time for minor hockey and other ice sports and activities in south Calgary.

The ‘Trico Centre for Family Wellness Expansion project’ will include renovations and additions such as: a second arena and new dressing rooms for the existing arena, ground level entry, family change rooms, upgrades to men’s and women’s pool change rooms, enhancements to food services area, additional 7000 square feet of tenant space, and additional permanent parking for patrons.

B. Goal for the Project
The piece should reflect the mission and vision of the Trico Centre for Family Wellness.  Their vision is that “we are a dynamic, responsive, sustainable organization committed to excellence”.  Their mission is to “provide our communities an opportunity to enrich a healthy, active lifestyle in a welcoming and respectful family environment”.  The Centre’s slogan is “active kids, healthy families, vibrant seniors”.

C. Objectives
In collaboration with the project team, the piece should meet the following objectives:

    • Reflect the spirit of community, with an emphasis on family, including seniors
    • Be an iconic representation of the facility
    • Represent the many purposes of the site, such as hockey, swimming, fitness, before and after school care, day-care, arts and crafts and programming for all age groups
    • Be compatible with LEED standards where applicable

The public art must be resilient, durable, low maintenance, vandalism resistant, able to withstand high humidity and moisture, and in addition, if an outside location is selected, must be able to withstand frequent freeze/thaw weather conditions.

    D. Public Art Opportunities
The attached site plans show the designated locations for the art work.  These sites include:

1.)     Front entrance way against the tall windows outside
2.)     Front entrance at veranda in foyer
3.)     Front entrance under open light in foyer
4.)     Façade on entrance wall outside
5.)     Concession or seating area, freestanding or as façade
6.)     Façade above ramp to second level

Final determination of public art sites will depend on the selected artist’s vision, which will be developed in collaboration with the project team and dependent upon timelines and budget.

Rhode Island Artist Lanham Bundy to Exhibit at NYC Armory Show

          Friday, February 27th, 2009

Rhode Island Artist Lanham Bundy is one of 16 international artists selected to exhibit with VSA arts at The 2009 Armory Show from March 5-8, 2009 in New York City. A “Meet the Artists Reception” will also be held Thursday, March 5 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. at the Edlin Gallery, 529 West 20th Street, 6th floor, NYC

The Armory Show’s International Fair of New Art has been the world’s leading art fair devoted exclusively to contemporary art since its introduction in 1999. In this, their inaugural debut during the Armory Show, VSA arts will present work by artists whose work has been heavily influenced by their experience of living with a disability, reimagining and defying the limitations of the body and the mind.

VSA arts, an international nonprofit organization that provides opportunities in the arts for people with disabilities, will promote the work of 16 artists with disabilities including mixed-media artist Lanham Bundy of Providence, RI at Booth #1601 on Pier 94. “The artwork and artists that VSA arts is showcasing at The Armory will highlight the depth of work from artists with disabilities by considering their contributions within a greater context than that of so-called ‘outsider’ art” said Jeannine Chartier, VSA arts of RI director. “We’re pleased to bring the exceptional work of Lanham before the critics, artists, galleries and art lovers who will be attending this year’s Armory Show.”

In addition to a career that includes numerous one-person and group exhibits throughout the Northeast, Ms. Bundy has served as an instructor in VSA arts of Rhode Island’s programs for over a decade. Bundy began to experience bi-polar disorder in high school and more severely in college. “When my own feelings seemed out of proportion by other people’s standards, the physical fact of making or depicting something was reassuringly tangible and undeniable,” she says. At RISD she studied visual references and symbols from various cultures and traditions including 16th century Spanish still life and pre-Renaissance Italian sacred art and graduated with a BFA with honors. Her current works  “Locked Ward A” and “Locked Ward B”, will be exhibited at The Armory.

VSA Arts of RI is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities through active participation in the arts and accredited by the national VSA arts, founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith as an educational affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VSA arts of RI’s programs provide unique opportunities for Rhode Islanders with disabilities to contribute to the cultural life of our community through education and employment in the literary, performing and visual arts while promoting increased access to the arts for people with disabilities.
