There is a very exciting initiative for youth happening in Providence this summer! The  Department of Art, Culture and Tourism in Providence through The Workforce Investment Act / 2009 Summer Youth Employment Recovery Act has been training 260 youth ages 14-24  in a variety of jobs ranging form “green” jobs to beautification, to arts and technology. For many of these youth, this is their first work experience.   Harken Productions is well underway training and providing work for 6 of these youth being paid under President Obama’s stimulus program.  Our youth, trained in all aspects of documentary production, are assisting in the making of a short documentary for the city of Providence about all of the art and community based work experiences happening this summer.                                                                                                                                Our footage ranges from gorgeous mural projects happening around the city, to youth working in sustainable agriculture, conservation, recycling, product design, photography, metal working, and documentary filmmaking (us). All of these projects demonstrate the city of Providence’s commitment to a future economy infused with creativity.  Youth across the city are learning to think outside the box and express themselves more fully and clearly. They are learning to see in new ways, work as a team, and experience the pride of being able to help support their families.   Our film will be finished by the end of September and will be featured on the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism Youtube site, among other venues.
