Rhode Island ACLU raises concerns about impact on arts community of prostitution/sex trafficking legislation

Steve Brown, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (RI ACLU) has written to RISCA raising concern about legislation signed into law by Governor Carcieri designed to close a loophole in state law and make prostitution illegal in Rhode Island.

A copy of Mr. Brown’s letter can be found here in .pdf format.  The bill that was signed into law can be found here, also in .pdf format.

In his letter Brown outlines what he says is language in the final law that could affect legitimate artistic expression in Rhode Island.  Rhode Island Citizens for the Arts is gathering information on this issue, so if you have issues or concerns please contact Lisa Carnevale at lisa@ri4arts.org.
