Glazed stoneware tiles are suitable for interior or exterior surfaces. Installation is completed with volunteer help from faculty and parents. Subject matter is drawn from school curriculum, through collaboration with faculty members. Ellen works with each school or group's current curriculum, so that students will be learning through the art form. Each participant will create a drawing, which is composed by the artist into a template for the mural. All students will then sculpt, refine and glaze the mural. She has published a collection of poems entitled "Tus campinas claman el llanto de mi alma" (Your countryside claims the the cry of my soul) and has written poetry and columns for Spanish-language periodicals in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She has worked extensively in schools and correctional facilities for both Spanish and English-speaking audiences of all ages. In 1983, Obuamah came to the US and joined the ensemble Odadda as a lead singer, led by his uncle Yacub Addy who most recently was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. Odadda has toured and collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra releasing an album "Congo Square" and traveling widely through the US, Japan, Canada and the Carribean; with appearances at the Kennedy Center (DC) Rose Hall at Lincoln Center (NYC) and the Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada). A recent broadcast performance by Odadda, included the President Obama pre-inaugural "Celebration of America" led by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in January 2009. In 2010 Obuamah established as the musical director the AS220 Criss Cross Orchestra (ACCO) with the help of Umberto Crenca, artistic director of AS220 and Rhode Island Philharmonic School of Music in Providence, Rhode Island. The AS220 Criss Cross Orchestra is a dance band, with a variety of global sounds and a contagious energy. "Criss Cross" is a worldwide, polyrhythmic music that combines traditional native African, American, Caribbean, Cuban, Latin American and European musical styles, and includes the tonality, improvisations, and other musical dynamics found in Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, and Hip Hop. This is a really fun project, where all students can get involved and explore their individuality and imagination. The students are taken through a series of step-by-step exercises to explore the creative process. They learn to stretch their imagination with beautiful array of craft materials. Classes begin with group discussions, storytelling and creative exploration. For the fanciful wonderland display, the studentas create a group wall hanging made from scraps of materials and objects. They develop communication skills and at the same time ease into more challenging design projects. This program can be adjusted to the needs of the school and there can also be an emphasis on current environmental topics. Eclipse is an experienced art teacher and is currently the artist in residence with Pawtucket Child Opportunity Zone. She is a former art director at St. Dunstan's school. |

Students become familiar with the visual language of photography and are asked to reflect on such themes as: self, home, family, neighborhood, community and dreams. Their photographs serve as a springboard for writing, reflection and further photography. Projects culminate in a publication or a final public exhibition. Mary Beth has received RISCA education grants for for projects with Groundwork, Providence, and RI Youth Guidance as well as working in the Central Falls school system. |
