[F] Puerto Rican Poet. Maggie Picot was raised in the poetic tradition of her father, the "trovador" Pedro Picot, near Cidra, Puerto Rico. The family came to New England in 1973 and she has lived in RI since 1983. Maggie writes Puerto Rican folk poetry extolling the virtues of "jibaro" (hill farmer) life. She has published a collection of poems entitled "Tus campinas claman el llanto de mi alma" (Your countryside claims the the cry of my soul) and has written poetry and columns for Spanish-language periodicals in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She has worked extensively in schools and correctional facilities for both Spanish and English-speaking audiences of all ages. Maggie also works with the whole family doing literature workshops on any subject. Adults, teens, and elementary school school children will learn to express themelves and be poets during their time with her.
