[F] As a native of Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland, Phil learned to play the tin whistle in a place where, as he says, The backyard was the fields. When he was 14 years old, Phil, along with his family, emigrated to America and settled in South Providence, where he still lives. Besides with The Gnomes, Phil presently plays button accordion and whistles with several RI ensembles including: The Providence Wholebellies, AS220 Criss Cross Orchestra led by Ghanaian Obuamah Laud Addy, Celebrating Ireland in Story and Song, and Trua. The world music scene of Providence has had a big influence on Phil's music: catch him some Friday nights sitting in with Zerui DePina;s Cape Verde band in Central Falls. Phil has published four books: Reconnecting with the Soul of Ireland, Taking Great Care a Portrait of Community, Pip's Travels Welcome Home, and On the Grey Dog in the Sea of Humanity.
