RISCA's Arts Lottery Ticket - Fall/Winter of 2007

The Instant Lottery Game for the Arts -
Fall/Winter 2007

The Instant Lottery Game for the Arts

A project in partnership with:

Sponsor of local sales by the Rhode Island arts community:

The Instant Lottery Ticket:

At the end of the last legislative session, the statewide arts advocacy group Rhode Island Citizens for the Arts worked with members of the General Assembly to pass special one-time only legislation to honor the 40 year history of the State Arts Council by establishing a special instant lottery game.  The proceeds from that game over a three month period would go to support the arts.

The legislation, sponsored in the Senate by Senator Maryellen Goodwin and in the House of Representatives by Representative John McCauley was co-sponsored by Representatives Peter Lewiss, John Shanley, Edith Ajello, and William San Bento.

It was passed with the support of both Houses of the General Assembly

Bank Rhode Island sponsorship of arts community sales

In order to allow Rhode Island arts organizations to participate in the sale of the arts lottery tickets, BankRI has agreed to serve as a distributing vendor for the ticket. Here is how this process will work:

  • RISCA will provide Bank Rhode Island with a list of arts organizations that have been approved to purchase lottery tickets.
  • Approved arts organizations (want to get on this list? Contact us!) may purchase lottery tickets, for resale, at the following Bank Rhode Island locations:
      • Turks Head Branch, 1 Turks Head Place, Providence
      • East Side Branch, 137 Pitman Street, Providence
      • North Kingtown Branch, 1140 Ten Rod Road, North Kingstown
  • A full book of tickets contains 200 tickets and costs $190.00.
  • Approved arts organizations may purchase the tickets at Bank Rhode Island in increments of 50 for $.95 ea. ($47.50).
  • Arts organizations will sell the tickets @ $1.00 each.
  • RISCA will notify approved arts organizations when they can start purchasing tickets at Bank Rhode Island.  Purchases may be made though December 15, 2007.
  • From January 2 to January 11, unopened, unsold full books of tickets may be returned to the Bank Rhode Island locations for a full refund.

How to encourage your patrons and supporters to purchase the arts lottery ticket

The Arts Lottery Ticket is a short term approach to raising money to support the arts, so this is a great way for you and your patrons and supporters to help the arts throughout the state. Here's how you can take advantage of this one-time opportunity, by encouraging others to purchase lottery tickets during the October through December period:

  • Include information about the arts lottery ticket in your next newsletter or email to your patrons. Tell them that the revenue from these tickets will go to support the arts. Contact us if you need images or copy to drop into your publications.
  • Set up a table to sell lottery tickets in your lobby or at events during October, November and December. See above for details on how you can particulate in the BankRI sponsored sale of tickets.
  • Place "program stuffers" in your concert programs or printed material. Have brochures available at your office, or where your events take place (contact us for brochures).
  • Consider mentioning this initiative during current speeches or other "before performance" announcements.
  • Consider a raffle to win 100 arts lottery tickets at your next fundraising event.
  • Discuss this initiative when your board meets, and encourage board members to purchase tickets.
  • Don't underestimate the value of arts lottery tickets as gifts during the holiday season!
  • You're a winner - even if you're not! - Second Chance Drawings

You bought a lottery ticket and you didn't win a prize. Don't worry! You have a second chance at some terrific prizes, through the "Second Chance" drawings by the Rhode Island Lottery. Each week between October 1 and the end of December the Lottery will have a drawing from all the losing (or "non-winning") tickets. You can win tickets to Rhode Island arts events and activities, including concerts, performances, exhibitions, even galas! Click here for more information.
